On Thursday, Wikipedia, the largest online encyclopedia, marked its 25th anniversary, honoring a quarter-century of offering free, human-driven information to people everywhere.
To celebrate this milestone, the Wikimedia Foundation initiated a worldwide campaign to reflect on its history, the role of its volunteers, and the future of the platform. According to Maryana Iskander, CEO of Wikimedia Foundation, “Wikipedia is a digital marvel that has surmounted numerous hurdles due to the dedication of individuals sharing accessible, trustworthy knowledge on a global scale.”
As part of the celebration, Wikimedia launched a docuseries featuring eight volunteer editors from across the globe. Their stories highlight their commitment, from chronicling Californian storms to disseminating accurate COVID-19 info in India. Indian doctor Dr. Netha Hussain notably played a key role in sharing crucial pandemic knowledge, reflecting India’s significant contribution to the worldwide Wikipedia community.
Currently, India ranks fifth in global Wikipedia traffic, accruing approximately 800 million page views monthly, and stands third in terms of English Wikipedia contributors, following the US and UK. Wikipedia operates in over 25 Indic languages, covering nearly all of India’s 22 scheduled languages, making it a vital educational resource.
