The Vietnamese government has called for immediate action to hasten the progress of energy projects amid rising concerns over possible electricity shortages due to increasing economic activity. Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc led a high-level meeting in Hanoi, focusing on the development of the revised National Power Development Plan VIII and critical energy initiatives.
During the gathering, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc highlighted the significance of a steady electricity supply in realizing Vietnam’s economic aspirations. He cautioned that delays in vital energy projects could jeopardize energy security and hinder industrial advancement, digital transformation, and high-tech growth across the nation.
With the surging demand for electricity driven by the growth of manufacturing sectors, data centers, research facilities, and green energy initiatives, he directed ministries, local authorities, and energy firms to swiftly overcome obstacles hindering project timelines to ensure timely completion of key energy infrastructure.
Reports at the conference indicated that several essential power generation and transmission projects are lagging. Ministry of Industry and Trade officials warned that without prompt action, Vietnam may face power shortages between 2027 and 2030. Issues such as land clearance challenges, complex investment processes, and inadequate inter-agency cooperation are contributing to the slow pace of implementation.
Minister of Industry and Trade Le Manh Hung stressed that energy security extends beyond mere electricity generation, emphasizing the need for stable operations during crises and affordable power rates for citizens and businesses. The ministry suggested enhancing renewable energy initiatives, battery storage systems, offshore wind development, and modern coal plants with carbon capture capabilities.
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc urged a review of all projects within the national power development framework, advocating for the removal of those unlikely to meet deadlines. He insisted on tighter oversight of the investors and local authorities responsible for any delays and cautioned that stringent measures would be taken against non-compliant projects.
Additionally, the government seeks to implement special mechanisms to expedite urgent energy projects, streamline administrative processes, and prioritize vital electricity transmission lines to enhance distribution and facilitate power imports when necessary. Officials are also directed to formulate flexible emergency plans to guarantee a consistent electricity supply under all scenarios.
Pham Gia Tuc reiterated that Vietnam must not experience power shortages while striving for rapid economic growth and industrial modernization. He asserted that the Ministry of Industry and Trade bears direct accountability for ensuring energy security and the timely rollout of major initiatives outlined in the revised Power Development Plan VIII.
The meeting concluded with a call for better collaboration among ministries, provinces, corporations, and investors to streamline the progress of national energy projects, thereby further advancing Vietnam’s economic and sustainable development goals.
