Authorities have confirmed that Claudio Neves Valente, the suspect behind last week’s deadly shooting at Brown University, was found dead in Salem, New Hampshire. Officials say the death appears to have been the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing an end to a six-day multi-state manhunt.
Valente, a Portuguese national, entered the United States in 2017 through the diversity visa lottery program, also known as the green card lottery. He was later granted permanent residency. In the wake of the shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the suspension of the visa lottery program, citing concerns about public safety and the potential risks posed by the scheme.
Investigators have also linked Valente to the killing of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno Loureiro. The professor, 47, was shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, just days before the Brown University attack. Both men had attended the same university in Portugal in the late 1990s, and authorities used CCTV footage and witness reports to connect the two crimes. The suspect’s vehicle, identified through video surveillance, appeared near both crime scenes, helping law enforcement establish the link.
The Brown University shooting occurred on December 13 during final exams at the university’s engineering building. Two students were killed in the attack: 19-year-old Ella Cook from Alabama and 18-year-old Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek-American who had recently begun his studies at the university. Nine others were injured as the gunman opened fire in a busy classroom setting. At the time of the attack, Valente had no active enrollment or official affiliation with Brown University, according to university officials.
Police recovered two firearms and a satchel with Valente at the location where he was found dead. Additionally, investigators collected evidence from a car nearby, which was linked to the Providence shooting scene. While authorities have confirmed his connection to both killings, they have not publicly disclosed any motive for either attack.
The tragic events at Brown University and the murder of Professor Loureiro have reignited debates over the diversity visa lottery program, which allows individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States to apply for a green card through a random selection process. Following these incidents, officials emphasized the importance of reviewing immigration policies to ensure public safety while continuing to manage lawful immigration processes.
