The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime during Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference Final, taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven playoff series. Andrei Svechnikov scored the winning goal at 14:06 of overtime, giving Carolina its second straight overtime victory against Montreal and moving the team closer to a place in the Stanley Cup Final.
The game took place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, where both teams played an intense and highly competitive match from the opening minutes. Carolina started strongly and controlled much of the early play with aggressive attacking pressure. Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere opened the scoring for the Hurricanes in the first period after a rebound fell perfectly into the slot for him to fire the puck into the net.
Montreal quickly responded later in the first period when Mike Matheson scored after receiving a pass from rookie Ivan Demidov. The Canadiens briefly energized the home crowd with the equalizer, but Carolina regained the lead less than a minute later. Veteran forward Taylor Hall scored after collecting his own rebound in front of the net, giving the Hurricanes a 2-1 advantage before the first intermission.
The Canadiens tied the game again in the second period through defenseman Lane Hutson during a power play opportunity. Hutson finished a quick passing move involving Cole Caufield near the crease to make the score 2-2. The goal ended Carolina’s strong streak of successful penalty kills during the postseason.
Both teams created chances during the third period, but strong goaltending and defensive pressure kept the score level. Montreal thought it had taken the lead midway through the period when Noah Dobson scored, but the goal was overturned after Carolina successfully challenged the play for offside. The decision became one of the key moments of the game and kept the match tied heading into overtime.
In overtime, Carolina continued applying heavy offensive pressure and eventually found the winning moment through Svechnikov. The Russian forward fired a wrist shot from above the faceoff circle that slipped past Montreal goaltender Jakub Dobes through traffic in front of the net. The goal was first credited to Sebastian Aho before being officially changed to Svechnikov after replay review.
Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen made 11 saves during the game, while Montreal goalie Jakub Dobes delivered an impressive performance with 35 saves despite the loss. Carolina outshot Montreal heavily for much of the game and controlled possession during overtime, continuing the strong form that has made the Hurricanes one of the top teams in this year’s playoffs.
The Hurricanes have now won five overtime games during the postseason and improved their playoff record to 10-1 after losing the opening game of the Eastern Conference Final series. Carolina had earlier bounced back from a heavy 6-2 defeat in Game 1 and now holds momentum heading into Game 4 in Montreal.
Montreal, meanwhile, suffered back-to-back playoff losses for the first time this postseason. Despite the defeat, the Canadiens showed resilience throughout the game and continued receiving strong support from their home fans at the Bell Centre. Head coach Martin St. Louis said after the game that his team must improve execution and maintain a faster pace against Carolina’s aggressive playing style.
The Eastern Conference Final now continues with Game 4 scheduled in Montreal, where the Canadiens will attempt to level the series again before it returns to Carolina. Hockey analysts believe the series remains highly competitive, but Carolina’s recent overtime victories have given the Hurricanes an important psychological advantage moving forward.
