Severe Cold Wave Shuts Schools as Heavy Snow Hits the UK

Post by : Mina Carter

Hundreds of schools across the United Kingdom have been forced to close after the coldest night of the winter so far, as an intense Arctic air mass continues to grip the country. Temperatures plunged well below freezing overnight, with Marham in Norfolk recording a low of -12.5°C, while further snowfall and severe weather disruptions are expected in the coming days.

Large parts of northern Scotland remain under amber weather warnings for snow until Tuesday night, indicating a high risk of travel disruption, power cuts, and danger to life and property. Meanwhile, yellow warnings — signalling potential disruption — extend across much of the UK until late Tuesday morning.

Forecasters expect widespread snowfall of 5–10cm across central and northern Scotland, with some areas likely to receive up to 15cm. Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands saw temperatures drop to -11.2°C overnight. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages.

The prolonged cold spell has resulted in significant school closures nationwide. More than 330 schools in Wales and over 170 in Northern Ireland were shut on Tuesday. Local authorities in Aberdeenshire, Orkney, and Shetland confirmed continued closures, while dozens of schools in England, including Norfolk and Devon, either closed or delayed opening.

Transport services have also been heavily affected. Rail passengers faced delays after deep snow hindered maintenance work, and some international train services were suspended. Several ferry routes along Scotland’s west coast were disrupted, and road closures were reported in parts of Wales. Flights were temporarily grounded at Liverpool John Lennon Airport due to icy conditions before operations later resumed.

Looking ahead, the cold conditions are expected to persist. Weather forecasters warn that strong winds and heavy rain later in the week could create further hazards, especially as a powerful low-pressure system approaches the UK. Areas in southern England, which have largely avoided snow so far, may see wintry conditions on higher ground by Thursday and Friday.

Health authorities have issued amber cold weather health alerts across England through the end of the week, urging people to take precautions, particularly the elderly and vulnerable. The cold snap has also triggered cold weather payments in hundreds of postcode areas, providing financial support to eligible households experiencing prolonged freezing temperatures.

As winter conditions continue to intensify, authorities are advising the public to stay informed, avoid risky travel, and take steps to stay safe during the ongoing severe weather.
