In a groundbreaking achievement for the UAE's civil nuclear sector, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has announced that His Excellency Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Group CEO, has taken on the role of Chairman at the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Atlanta Centre in the United States. This appointment marks a significant moment as Al Hammadi becomes the first Arab to hold this position, reflecting the UAE's growing influence in the international nuclear arena.

The WANO-Atlanta Centre connects operators of over 100 commercial nuclear facilities across North America alongside select international affiliates. Its mandate is vital for enhancing performance standards, conducting peer reviews, and ensuring operational safety throughout the global nuclear landscape.

With over ten years of involvement in WANO, Al Hammadi has been a governing board member of the Atlanta Centre since 2015 and has served as WANO President from 2022 to 2024. His appointment arrives amidst U.S. initiatives to bolster civil nuclear capabilities with the support of federal resources and industry collaborations.

This announcement coincides with recent partnership agreements between ENEC and prominent U.S. nuclear firms, such as Westinghouse and GE Vernova, focusing on advancing new projects, enhancing fuel supply chains, and exploring investment opportunities in the next wave of nuclear technologies. With operations that adhere to U.S. standards and regulations guided by the NRC, ENEC is strategically situated to swiftly engage in joint U.S.-UAE nuclear projects.

The UAE's rising credibility in the nuclear industry is anchored in the success of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, which is notable as the first multi-unit nuclear site in the Arab region. Barakah produces 40 TWh of clean energy annually, satisfying a quarter of the nation’s energy needs and standing as the largest single electricity source in the area. Its reliability has positioned the UAE among the world's leading civil nuclear operators.

Through this pivotal leadership at WANO’s Atlanta Centre, the UAE aims to further its commitment to enhancing global nuclear safety, reliability, and collaboration, while simultaneously expanding its partnerships within the burgeoning civil nuclear sphere.
