UAE Withdraws from Islamabad Airport Project Following India Trip

Post by : Bianca Hayes

The recent trip of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India has triggered notable shifts in South Asian geopolitics and has posed an indirect challenge to Pakistan.

Following the Sheikh's brief three-hour visit to New Delhi, Abu Dhabi chose to scrap its initiative to manage Islamabad International Airport. Discussions had been ongoing since August 2025, but the UAE appears to have lost interest and struggled to secure a local partner for the airport's operations.

A Pakistani media outlet confirmed the cancellation while refraining from suggesting direct political motivations. Nevertheless, the timing is significant amid rising tensions between UAE and Saudi Arabia, both of which back opposing factions in Yemen and are increasingly diverging in their geopolitical strategies.

Pakistan has recently brokered a defense arrangement with Saudi Arabia and is working towards forming an "Islamic NATO" alongside Turkey. In contrast, the UAE is bolstering its defense and strategic relations with India, indicating a pivotal shift in regional alliances.

Historically, the UAE has been one of Pakistan’s key trade allies and a crucial source of remittances. Many Pakistanis are employed in the UAE, fostering collaborations in sectors like defense, energy, and investment. However, the bilateral relations have soured due to governance issues, safety concerns, political meddling, and financial losses in Pakistan's state-owned enterprises, compounded by recent privatizations including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Despite its international credentials in operating airports, even in conflict zones like Afghanistan, the UAE's exit from the Islamabad project reflects a diminishing confidence in Pakistan's infrastructure and governance frameworks.

Conversely, relations between India and the UAE are on an upswing. Following the visit, the UAE has agreed to release 900 Indian detainees as a sign of goodwill. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Mohamed bin Zayed are set to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into a more robust and multi-faceted alliance.

A significant outcome of this diplomatic visit was the advancement towards a full Strategic Defence Partnership. Both nations have signed a Letter of Intent that establishes a Defence Cooperation Framework, marking a critical geopolitical transition in the region.
