Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the European Union, expressed the UAE's strong endorsement of the European Parliament’s effort to bring an end to the civil war in Sudan. She affirmed the UAE's unwavering commitment to collaborating with international and regional partners to resolve this devastating conflict. According to her, the UAE will persist in its cooperation with European institutions to foster security, stability, and long-term development for the Sudanese populace.
In her remarks, Nusseibeh emphasized that the European Parliament’s resolution validates the pivotal role of the Quad as the primary mediation entity addressing the Sudan crisis. This acknowledgment confirms the Quad as the essential diplomatic framework uniting international efforts to cease hostilities. She noted that this backing amplifies ongoing peace initiatives and escalates global pressure on the conflicting factions.
Nusseibeh characterized the Quad Joint Statement as a significant benchmark in the quest to cease hostilities. The roadmap presents defined steps, commencing with a humanitarian ceasefire, followed by the establishment of a civilian-led government that operates independently from both opposing factions. She asserted that Sudan’s trajectory must not be influenced by extremist factions, particularly those associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which jeopardize both peace and stability. Only a civilian-led administration can restore Sudan’s institutions and eliminate extremism from the political scene.
Nusseibeh unequivocally condemned the severe violations perpetrated by both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Port Sudan Authority. She detailed how the violent actions of these groups have inflicted immense suffering on civilians and jeopardized Sudan’s future. She called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all involved parties to halt all forms of violence forthwith.
The UAE’s stance remains consistent: there should be an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan, coupled with unrestricted humanitarian access throughout the entire nation. Nusseibeh highlighted that the UAE’s endeavors have always prioritized humanitarian needs first. She reaffirmed that assisting the Sudanese people is a longstanding commitment for the UAE, which will continue to facilitate aid through all possible channels.
A report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) underscores the UAE’s substantial contributions to Sudan. Since the onset of the conflict, the UAE has donated USD 784 million in humanitarian assistance. This positions the UAE as the second-largest donor after the United States, and the foremost donor for the year 2025. Such contributions reflect the UAE’s deep commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese populace and supporting relief initiatives throughout this profound crisis.
Nusseibeh’s statement emphasizes the UAE’s conviction that global cooperation is crucial to resolving the conflict in Sudan. With the backing of the European Parliament for mediation efforts and the Quad proposing a pragmatic roadmap, there is renewed optimism for advancement. The UAE remains steadfast in its support for the Sudanese people, advocating for peace, stability, and humanitarian assistance on all fronts.
