The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a significant initiative named "AI for Development," committing $1 billion to advance artificial intelligence projects in Africa. This pivotal announcement took place during the G20 summit by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
The primary goal of the "AI for Development" initiative is to stimulate economic and social progress throughout Africa by bolstering digital infrastructure, improving governmental services, and boosting productivity. The focus is on facilitating developing nations in leveraging AI effectively within essential sectors, including education, agriculture, and infrastructure, thus paving the way for innovative solutions that foster growth and sustainable development.
Spearheading the project is the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in collaboration with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency. This cooperation emphasizes the UAE’s intent to assist developing regions in harnessing advanced technologies and utilizing AI for beneficial transformations.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, highlighted that the initiative exemplifies the UAE's conviction that AI can act as an essential instrument for equitable growth and sustainable development. He elaborated that by merging technological innovation, financial support, and partnerships, the UAE aims to assist African nations in surmounting challenges, thereby cultivating resilient economies.
He asserted that implementing AI across sectors like education and agriculture unveils fresh prospects for inclusive advancement. Additionally, this initiative provides a platform for UAE businesses to engage in significant projects that enhance economic and technological relations with African nations, aligning with global sustainable development goals.
This program honors the visionary humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding leader, and emphasizes the continuous support from the country's leadership, including President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, reinforced the UAE’s vital role in global community support. He mentioned that the UAE is committed to launching impactful projects utilizing AI to fuel development, particularly in Africa. Dr. Al Ameri noted that this initiative forms part of the UAE’s enduring mission to enhance living standards and construct a brighter future for those facing developmental hurdles.
Numerous African nations require initiatives aimed at fortifying education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The UAE is rapidly ascending to a position of global leadership in artificial intelligence and technology, earning high rankings in international digital advancement metrics.
Since 1971, the UAE has contributed over AED 152 billion in support to African nations. This new AI for Development initiative builds upon that extensive history, aspiring to increase AI-driven projects across the continent. It fortifies the UAE’s role as a nexus for revolutionary technologies and intelligent systems, contributing to the broader agenda of innovation, modernization, and inclusive global growth.
This groundbreaking initiative showcases the UAE’s promise as a leader in technology and development, offering innovative solutions that propel sustainable progress across Africa and beyond.
