UAE Champions Climate Initiatives at Belém Summit 2025

Representing a commitment to global climate action, the UAE made waves at the Belém Climate Summit in Brazil on November 6-7, 2025. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, spearheaded the delegation alongside Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Nature, reflecting the nation's high-level dedication to environmental issues.

Convened by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the summit took place amidst the beautiful Brazilian Amazon and attracted global leaders, ministers, and organizational heads. Key discussions revolved around rapid energy transitions, the safeguarding of forests, and enhancing transparency in climate actions.

UAE Advocates for Transparent Climate Goals

In her opening remarks, Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the UAE’s commitment to transparency, indicating the nation’s plans to broaden its reporting to encompass all six greenhouse gases. This initiative reinforces the UAE’s capacity to effectively monitor and respond to climate challenges. She elaborated on national projects that focus on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, food security enhancements, and green infrastructure, showcasing the UAE as a benchmark for sustainability.

The minister encouraged nations to set more ambitious targets in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and utilize globally recognized indicators for adaptation, which fosters clear measurement of joint progress.

Nature Conservation Takes Priority

During the unveiling of the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF), Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak underscored the UAE’s commitment to nature-based solutions. The UAE took early action as a supporter and interim steering committee member of this initiative, pledging to assist tropical forest countries and engage partners in stopping deforestation by 2030, aligning with COP28 UAE Consensus objectives. “Safeguarding tropical forests is essential for our climate and the planet’s future,” she stated.

Strategic Energy Transition

In the “Energy Transition” session, Dr. Al Dahak stressed the importance of a global movement towards renewable energy, ensuring accessibility and security for all. She reaffirmed the UAE's dedication to global climate initiatives and the 1.5°C goal, backing efforts to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The Belém Summit, ahead of COP30, was a platform for leaders to deliberate on urgent climate strategies, refreshed NDCs, and financial commitments stemming from COP29. The UAE's proactive engagement highlighted its pivotal role in influencing international climate policy and advocating for sustainable solutions.
