In a pioneering move, Burjeel Medical City has successfully conducted the UAE's inaugural uniportal robotic lobectomy, enhancing its status as a leader in advanced healthcare solutions.
The innovative procedure was performed on a 37-year-old patient diagnosed with stage one lung cancer. Using robotic technology, surgeons executed this intricate operation through a solitary 3cm incision, emphasizing precision and minimal invasiveness.
The journey began when the patient consulted the hospital due to a persistent dry cough unresponsive to treatment. Subsequent investigations, including a CT scan and biopsy, confirmed early-stage lung cancer. After thorough deliberation by a team of specialists, surgery was deemed necessary.
Dr. Taj Mohammed Fiyaz Chowdhry, a consultant thoracic surgeon, led the procedure utilizing the sophisticated da Vinci Xi system. The surgery unfolded over approximately four hours and was executed without any complications.
Dr. Chowdhry noted that this surgical approach is particularly beneficial for early-stage cancer with minimal lymph node involvement, enhancing patient outcomes while shortening recovery time.
Remarkably, the patient was able to leave the hospital just two days post-surgery, a significant reduction compared to the conventional five to seven days for standard operations. Recovery was expedited, allowing the patient to resume work within a month.
Burjeel Medical City expressed that this milestone underscores the skill of its multidisciplinary teams and their dedication to integrating advanced technologies for improved patient care in minimally invasive contexts.
