President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed hundreds of costumed guests to the White House on Thursday evening for the annual Halloween celebration, transforming the South Lawn into a festive space filled with laughter, candy, and colorful autumn decorations.
The event took place even as the federal government remained partially shut down for its 30th consecutive day, and Trump had returned only hours earlier from a six-day Asia trip covering Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. Despite these challenges, the Halloween festivities went ahead as planned, continuing a White House tradition that dates back decades.
The First Couple Greet Guests
As dusk settled over Washington, the Trumps made their entrance to an orchestral version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” While many guests arrived in elaborate costumes, the president and first lady opted for formal attire — Trump in a blue suit, red tie, and his signature red “USA” cap, and Melania in a brown coat layered over an orange dress.
The couple distributed full-sized Hershey bars and Twizzlers, neatly packed in boxes bearing the presidential seal. Children and parents, some dressed as superheroes, princesses, and even miniature versions of the Trumps themselves, lined up along the driveway for their treats.
“It’s a long line,” the president joked, glancing toward the ongoing construction behind them. “It’s almost as big as the ballroom.”
White House Decked in Fall Colors
The South Lawn showcased a seasonal theme, with orange and red chrysanthemums, large carved pumpkins, and autumn leaves scattered across the stairways and balcony. However, temporary walls were placed to block the ongoing construction of Trump’s new White House ballroom, which required partial demolition of the East Wing. A bulldozer could still be spotted beyond the temporary barriers.
Despite the construction backdrop, the overall atmosphere was cheerful and family-oriented. The guests included children of U.S. military service members and White House staff, many of whom arrived in themed costumes.
Familiar Faces Join the Celebration
Among the attendees were several White House officials and their families. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt brought her young son, dressed adorably as a pumpkin. Former administration aide Katie Miller attended as a skeleton, while her husband, Stephen Miller, now deputy chief of staff, appeared in a business suit.
The crowd included children dressed as Spider-Man, Captain America, ballerinas, and even leprechauns. A few guests drew particular attention — two boys wearing suits and red “Trump” hats, along with a girl dressed in a style reminiscent of Melania Trump’s fashion choices. Several parents sported matching “USA” caps, echoing the president’s own.
Light Moments Amid Political Tensions
While much of the event centered around fun and festivity, it unfolded against a backdrop of national political tension. The ongoing government shutdown had entered its 30th day, caused by a standoff between Republicans and Democrats over extending tax credits that help millions afford health insurance.
Trump has urged Congress to reopen the government without conditions, while Democrats insist on renewing healthcare subsidies before any agreement is reached.
Additionally, Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports have reportedly driven up costs for Halloween retailers and costume importers, adding a hint of irony to the event’s theme.
Still, the evening remained lighthearted. At one point, Trump chuckled after seeing a child dressed in a costume that featured an inflatable toilet labeled “Wide Load.” The president bent down to share a few words with the young guest, though his remarks were inaudible over the laughter of those nearby.
A Blend of Tradition and Turbulence
The annual White House Halloween celebration has long been a cherished occasion for staff families and military personnel, symbolizing a rare moment of levity in Washington’s political calendar. This year’s event, however, was notable for juxtaposing the joy of family festivities with the stark realities of governance and policy disputes.
Despite the pressures of an extended government shutdown and ongoing debates over trade and healthcare, the Trumps’ Halloween celebration succeeded in momentarily shifting attention to laughter, costumes, and the innocence of childhood — reminding Americans that even in politically charged times, some traditions continue to bring people together.
