Trump Mistakenly Calls Canadian PM President at Gaza Summit

US President Donald Trump sparked laughter and surprised onlookers at the Gaza Peace Summit on Monday when he accidentally referred to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as “President.”

The summit, hosted at Egypt’s scenic Sharm el-Sheik resort, gathered world leaders to witness and endorse a landmark peace agreement between Israel and Hamas.

During his speech, Trump highlighted Canada’s involvement, saying,

"You have Canada. That's so great to have. In fact, the President called, and he wanted to know if it was worth – well, he knew exactly what it was. He knew the importance. Where's Canada, by the way? Where are you? He knew the importance of this."

In the process, he mistakenly elevated Carney’s title. The Canadian leader, quick with humor, quipped, “Thanks for upgrading me to President,” as they shook hands after the speech.

Trump, 79, immediately recognized the error, smiling and patting Carney on the shoulder. He joked in response,

"Oh, did I say that? At least I didn't call you a governor."

The remark recalled a December 2024 incident when Trump, then President-elect, had referred to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor of the Great State of Canada” in a social media post. Over time, Trump has occasionally teased the idea of Canada joining the US as a 51st state.

Despite the gaffe, the meeting between the two leaders was cordial. They exchanged pleasantries, and no further missteps were reported.

Beyond the humorous moment, the summit itself served as an endorsement of the US President. Attending global leaders praised Trump from the podium while he clapped, cheered, and observed the signing ceremony.

The Gaza Peace Summit remains a historic moment, not only for its diplomatic achievements but also for the lighthearted human moments that punctuated high-stakes international negotiations.
