Ayushmann Khurrana’s Thamma Crosses ₹200 Crore at the Global Box Office

Post by : Mina Carter

Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna's newest horror comedy, Thamma, has hit a remarkable milestone, surpassing the ₹200 crore mark globally within just three weeks since its release. As part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), the film is now ranked as the 8th highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, overtaking Salman Khan's Sikandar.

This achievement emphasizes the rising popularity of the horror-comedy genre in India and the strong appeal of franchise storytelling among local audiences.

Domestic Box Office Highlights

According to Maddock Films, the film has garnered around ₹153.18 crore net (approximately ₹183.50 crore gross) in Indian cinemas in just 20 days. While the movie continues to attract viewers, its daily domestic earnings have slowed to ₹1.50–2 crore, a typical taper typical for films in their third week of release.

Despite this tapering, the solid initial performance and steady viewer turnout have spurred its rapid rise up the box office rankings.

International Performance

While overseas markets haven't reached the same excitement as domestically, Thamma has successfully earned over $2.5 million internationally. Its total worldwide gross is approximately ₹206 crore, though some industry trackers estimate a slightly lower figure of ₹185 crore.

This international revenue indicates the niche appeal of Indian horror-comedy films outside the subcontinent, where cultural nuances may not resonate as strongly; however, the star power of Khurrana and Mandanna has led to a commendable result.

Franchise Performance Comparisons

In the context of this year's Indian cinema, Thamma has outdone the lifetime earnings of Sikandar, which was ₹177 crore, and has even surpassed the global total of Stree (₹184 crore), establishing itself as the second-highest-grossing film within the MHCU franchise. The leader remains Stree 2, which amassed an impressive ₹874 crore, a benchmark that Thamma may not reach but illustrates the franchise's expanding influence.

The film’s success highlights the strategic development of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which has now affirmed itself as a lucrative and beloved film universe.

About the Film: Cast and Storyline

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma uniquely weaves Indian folklore with horror comedy, offering a blend of chills and laughs. The stellar cast includes:

  • Ayushmann Khurrana

  • Rashmika Mandanna

  • Nawazuddin Siddiqui

  • Paresh Rawal

Additionally, Varun Dhawan makes a special appearance, reprising his role from Bhediya and Stree 2, enhancing the franchise's interconnectivity.

Future Prospects for the MHCU

Thamma sets the stage for the upcoming MHCU installment, Shakti Shalini, which will feature Aneet Padda from Saiyaara. The franchise has seven other films in the pipeline, including sequels and a two-part mega-crossover set for 2029, promising an expansive cinematic journey for fans.

The triumph of Thamma illustrates the potency of franchise storytelling within Indian cinema, particularly when blending horror, comedy, and culturally relevant elements. With a global gross exceeding ₹200 crore, Thamma firmly establishes itself as a cultural and commercial sensation in 2025.
