Thailand Eases Alcohol Sales Restrictions to Attract Holiday Tourists

Post by : Raina Carter

In a bid to attract more tourists during the bustling holiday season, Thailand has lifted its longstanding ban on afternoon alcohol sales. This historic move suspends a decades-old rule that previously limited the sale of alcoholic beverages between 14:00 and 17:00 for a trial period of six months, in an effort to rejuvenate the country's tourism-centric economy.

Now, bar owners, restaurants, and licensed vendors throughout Thailand can offer beer, wine, and spirits from 11:00 AM until midnight. Authorities believe this temporary change will allow them to evaluate the effects of prolonged selling hours on tourism and public conduct.

Originally established in 1972 to prevent government employees from drinking during work hours, this rule had become a point of contention for international visitors drawn to Thailand’s vibrant nightlife and splendid beaches. The timing of this policy adjustment aligns strategically with the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, which are peak travel seasons for Thailand.

Previously, breaking this afternoon prohibition could result in hefty fines up to 10,000 baht (£235; $313), a burden that locals and tourists alike had often found cumbersome. By revoking this restriction, the government aims to enhance Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming tourist destination while supporting businesses transitioning from years of political disruption.

Tourism revival ranks high among the priorities set by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who assumed office in September. Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram emphasized that concerns of government employees indulging in drinks during working hours are outdated. “Today’s workplace discipline is much improved,” he stated.

According to the World Health Organisation, Thailand is among the leading alcohol-consuming nations in Asia, with local beer brands such as Chang and Singha being favorites among both residents and visitors.

Tourism is crucial to Thailand’s economic health, and easing alcohol sale restrictions is hoped to encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more in hospitality and entertainment sectors. The government plans to assess the consequences of this trial phase before making the new alcohol sales hours a permanent feature.
