New Allegations Arise in Sunjay Kapur Estate Dispute

The ongoing legal battle over the estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur takes an unexpected turn as new allegations surface in the Delhi High Court. Samaira Kapur, daughter of actress Karisma Kapoor, claims her university fees have remained unpaid for two months, a statement promptly refuted by her stepmother, Priya Kapur, intensifying the existing disputes.

The court had been hearing an interim injunction plea put forth by Samaira and her brother, Kiaan, to prevent Priya Kapur from transferring or managing any of Sunjay Kapur’s assets until the legitimacy of his will is clarified. Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children, highlighted that Samaira, currently studying in the U.S., has been waiting for her fee payments for two months. He emphasized that it is Priya’s duty, as the manager of the estate, to ensure timely payments for educational and living expenses, as dictated by the matrimonial agreement.

Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Kapur, countered these claims, asserting that all expenses for Karisma’s children had been settled already. He firmly stated that no outstanding dues exist, challenging the accuracy of the university fee claims.

This exchange led Justice Jyoti Singh to remind both parties that the court should not serve as a venue for emotional disputes. The judge urged that future hearings should address only pertinent issues and instructed Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, also representing Priya, to manage everyday matters privately rather than in court. A follow-up hearing is slated for 19 November.

The conflict surrounding Sunjay Kapur’s estate began after his passing on 12 June, reportedly from a heart attack while playing polo in London. Following his demise, Samaira and Kiaan raised allegations that Priya forged Sunjay's will, claiming that they were assured of their rightful shares, which they argue are absent from the presented will.

The contentious nature of this legal dispute features serious accusations regarding inheritance, asset management, and the validness of the will, as the High Court prepares to consider additional evidence and viewpoints that will shape the distribution of the estate.
