Sonam Bajwa recalls Gurpurab memories as she films in Punjab

Actor Sonam Bajwa, a familiar face in Punjabi cinema thanks to hits such as the Carry On Jatta series and Godday Godday Chaa (2023), has opened up about her deep connection to Gurpurab, the celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth.

Although she never lived in Punjab, Sonam says the festival has always meant a lot to her. "I was born in Uttarakhand and grew up in Uttar Pradesh with my grandparents. Every Guru Nanak Jayanti, I clearly remember joining the Prabhat Pheris," she recalls warmly.

The 36-year-old actress remembers the simple joys of the day as a child. "I looked forward to Kada Prasad, boondi and laddoos. Even if school was off, we would go to celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti and offer prayers — it was always so joyful," she says.

She also credits her mother for the spiritual atmosphere at home. "My mother is amritdhari and continues to do sewa. I grew up surrounded by that practice," Sonam adds, noting she does not have clear memories of doing sewa herself.

Another memory she cherishes is the langar. "I loved the kaali daal and phulka served then. Even when you try to recreate it at home, it never quite tastes the same," she reflects.

These days the festival feels different because of her hectic work life. Since branching into Bollywood with projects this year like Baaghi 4, Housefull 5 and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, she often works through special occasions. "Festivals feel different without my parents around. This year I'll be shooting in Punjab on Gurpurab — working through festivals, New Year’s and birthdays has become normal," she concludes.
