Snapchat Implements Age Verification for Teens Ahead of Australia’s New Regulations

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In anticipation of Australia's stringent under-16 social media ban set to implement on December 10, Snapchat has initiated age verification for its teenage users throughout Australia.

This unexpected change took effect on Monday, prompting users to verify their ages using an Australian bank account, government-issued identification, or by submitting a selfie to an external partner that will assess age. Accounts belonging to users unable to verify or found to be under 16 will be locked once the law is enforced.

These new regulations place accountability squarely on social media platforms, including giants like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Platforms that permit minors under 16 to maintain accounts post-deadline risk facing significant penalties. While Snapchat expressed its disagreement with the ban, it confirmed adherence to local laws.

The company also advised its younger users to download their data promptly, cautioning that accessing it may become challenging once enforcement begins.

Interestingly, 10 platforms including WhatsApp, Discord, Pinterest, and Lego Play have been exempt from the first phase of the new regulations, although officials warned that this list might change at any time.

Australia's stringent measures have garnered international attention as countries worldwide look to mitigate online risks for young users. New Zealand is poised to introduce similar laws, while the Netherlands has urged parents to limit social media usage among children under 15.

With such robust restrictions rolling out, the upcoming weeks will be pivotal in assessing whether these major platforms can effectively validate user ages at scale and if the clampdown will truly reshape how teens engage with online spaces.
