A devastating shooting incident has occurred at Mexico’s renowned archaeological site, Teotihuacan, leaving one Canadian tourist deceased and 13 others injured, as confirmed by authorities on Monday.
This tragic event unfolded at the Pyramid of the Moon, a key highlight of this ancient pre-Aztec city located about 50 km from Mexico City. The site is among the most frequented tourist locations in the country.
Officials stated that the assailant opened fire on visitors before taking his own life. The shooter’s identity and nationality remain unverified.
Among the injured were six people hit by gunfire, which included a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and her child, a Brazilian tourist, and two Americans—who were subsequently transported to nearby medical facilities.
In addition, seven other tourists sustained injuries while trying to escape the scene; they hailed from various countries, including Russia, Colombia, Brazil, and four from the U.S. Medical assistance was provided on-site for these individuals.
Security forces, comprising local police and the National Guard, swiftly responded to the situation. A firearm, a knife, and unused ammunition were recovered from the area, which was immediately evacuated and secured.
Social media videos depicted the chaos among tourists as gunshots rang out on the pyramid steps, with many taking cover while others fled.
Teotihuacan, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its ancient pyramids, attracting over 1.8 million visitors annually. Despite widespread issues with organized crime in Mexico, armed incidents at major archaeological sites are infrequent.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand labeled the incident as a “horrific act of gun violence.” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for a comprehensive investigation and sent support personnel to the site.
The motive for this attack remains unconfirmed, and investigations are ongoing.
