A court in Toronto has found Richard Edwin guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for killing two strangers in separate shootings in April 2022. The verdict was delivered after the court rejected his defence that he was not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder.

The case involved the deaths of Kartik Vasudev, aged 21, and Elijah Mahepath, aged 35. Both victims were shot in unprovoked attacks just two days apart, shocking the local community and raising serious concerns about public safety.

According to the court, the first incident took place on April 7, 2022, near a subway station in the city. Edwin approached Vasudev from behind and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. Two days later, on April 9, he carried out a similar attack, shooting Mahepath on a public street. Both victims later died from their injuries.

During the trial, Edwin admitted to carrying out the shootings but argued through his lawyers that he was suffering from schizophrenia and was unable to understand the moral consequences of his actions. However, Jane Kelly ruled that although Edwin had a mental illness, there was not enough reliable evidence to prove that he was experiencing hallucinations or delusions at the time of the crimes.

The judge noted that the attacks appeared to be planned and deliberate rather than impulsive. Evidence presented in court showed that Edwin had prepared for the shootings, including travelling with a loaded firearm and targeting individuals in a calculated manner. This indicated that he understood his actions and their consequences.

The court also heard that Edwin lived an isolated life and had shown signs of paranoia. However, the judge concluded that he was still capable of making rational decisions and knew that what he was doing was wrong.

With the guilty verdict, Edwin now faces serious legal consequences, including a life sentence. The case highlights the challenges courts face when dealing with mental health issues in criminal cases, especially when determining responsibility and intent.
