Residents in Atlantic Canada are advised to prepare for a combination of snow and high winds this weekend, as various weather warnings have been activated in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Across central and northwestern New Brunswick, encompassing Edmundston, Woodstock, and Campbellton counties, snowfall warnings have been announced. Forecasts indicate up to 15 centimetres of snow, with maximum accumulations anticipated in elevated areas where temperatures are lower. Environment Canada highlights that this will be a lengthy event, leading to melting and compacted snow on surfaces, which may impair vehicle traction. Motorists are asked to exercise caution and anticipate longer travel durations due to expected reduced visibility.
In northern Nova Scotia, significant snowfall is not anticipated; however, windy conditions are set to prevail, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. Wind warnings are currently in force for Guysborough, Richmond, and Cape Breton County, including Sydney. Officials warn that these high winds may disrupt travel and services, urging residents to secure any loose items outdoors.
In Newfoundland, wind alerts will remain in effect until Monday morning for regions such as the southern Avalon Peninsula, Bonavista Peninsula, and portions of the western shoreline. Gusts are projected to range between 80 km/h and 110 km/h, with Channel-Port aux Basques potentially experiencing gusts up to 140 km/h late Sunday into Monday morning. Authorities caution that these conditions could result in property damage in certain communities.
Furthermore, a snowfall warning is active for Eagle River, N.L., where the Trans-Labrador Highway, stretching from Cartwright Junction to Upper Lake Melville, may see between 5 to 10 cm of snow, with elevated regions possibly accumulating up to 15 cm.
Environment Canada strongly advises residents to stay updated with local forecasts, adjust their travel plans accordingly, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety throughout this weekend's severe weather.
