The Bright Star 2025 military exercise ended this week in Egypt, bringing together the armies of 40 different countries. Saudi Arabia played a strong role in this large drill, showing its growing skills and readiness to work with other nations.
The event took place at the Mohamed Naguib Military Base in Egypt, one of the biggest military bases in the Middle East. It ran for 14 days, starting on August 28 and finishing on September 10. Bright Star is held every two years and is co-hosted by Egypt and the United States Central Command. This year marked the 19th edition of the exercise.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in the Drill
Saudi forces joined with troops from across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the United States. The Saudi Armed Forces showed their abilities in different types of training. These included:
Combat drills using tanks and armored vehicles.
Irregular warfare operations designed to fight terrorist groups.
Reconnaissance missions, where soldiers collect information about enemy movements.
Live-fire exercises, in which real bullets and weapons are used in practice battles.
Parachute drops and friendship jumps, where paratroopers from different countries carried their national flags.
The Saudi Marine Forces also carried out amphibious landings and coastal attacks. These involved fire preparation, clearing beaches, and securing coastal areas. This type of training is very important for any country that must defend long coastlines, like Saudi Arabia.
Leadership and Presence
Several senior Saudi commanders attended the closing ceremony. Among them were Maj. Gen. Hussein bin Saeed Al-Qahtani, Commander of the Northwestern Region, and Rear Admiral Mansour bin Saud Al-Juaid, Commander of the Western Fleet. Lt. Gen. Fahd bin Saud Al-Johani, chief of staff of the Saudi Land Forces, also observed parts of the training. Their presence showed the importance Saudi Arabia gives to this international cooperation.
Why Bright Star Matters
The Bright Star exercise is not just about practicing with weapons. It also has political and security importance. For Saudi Arabia, joining such drills shows three clear goals:
Building Readiness – By training in real conditions, Saudi soldiers become better prepared for future conflicts or emergencies.
Working with Allies – The drill allows Saudi troops to practice side by side with friendly nations, building trust and coordination.
Strengthening Security – In a region facing terrorism, piracy, and political tension, the ability of different armies to work together helps bring stability.
Bright Star also demonstrates how Saudi Arabia is moving forward with its defense modernization plans. Over the past decade, the Kingdom has increased investment in equipment, training, and international cooperation. Taking part in such high-level drills proves that Saudi Arabia is becoming one of the most capable militaries in the region.
Regional and International Impact
With 40 countries present, Bright Star 2025 was one of the largest joint military exercises in recent years. The presence of nations from the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond highlights the shared goal of fighting terrorism and protecting global trade routes.
The United States and Egypt, as co-hosts, played central roles. For Washington, Bright Star is a chance to maintain strong military ties with Arab partners. For Cairo, it strengthens Egypt’s position as a leader in regional defense. Saudi Arabia’s active role in this setting shows that it, too, is serious about regional peace and global cooperation.
Lessons from the Drill
The different training activities highlighted modern challenges in warfare. Soldiers did not only prepare for traditional battles using tanks and planes. They also practiced how to deal with irregular threats like small terrorist groups, coastal raids, or sudden attacks. The inclusion of joint parachute drops carrying national flags was a symbolic moment, underlining friendship among countries despite their differences.
For Saudi Arabia, the exercise showed the professionalism of its armed forces. The participation of marines, land forces, and paratroopers highlighted the variety of skills now present in the Kingdom’s military.
Editorial View
Bright Star 2025 proves once again that defense is not just about protecting borders. In today’s world, security is shared. No single nation can face challenges alone. By taking part in this multinational drill, Saudi Arabia is sending a clear message: it is ready to stand with its partners to protect peace and stability.
The participation also shows Saudi Arabia’s commitment to building a future where its army is modern, adaptable, and trusted. As conflicts in different parts of the world continue, cooperation among nations will remain essential. Bright Star gives all countries a chance to learn, improve, and show unity.
Saudi Arabia’s strong performance at this exercise is a sign of its growing role in international security. It not only benefits the Kingdom but also supports the wider Middle East in facing shared threats. For the people of Saudi Arabia, it is a moment of pride, showing that their soldiers are ready to defend both the nation and its allies.
