Health officials in Hamilton have confirmed an increase in salmonella infection cases linked to a local restaurant, as investigations into the outbreak continue. Authorities say the number of confirmed cases has now risen to 13, up from nine reported earlier in the week.
The outbreak has been connected to Piper Arms Stoney Creek, located on Stone Church Road East. Public health officials are working to determine the exact cause of the infections and to prevent further spread.
According to Hamilton Public Health, several people affected by the outbreak required medical attention. Initially, seven hospitalizations were reported, but further review showed that two individuals were treated in the emergency department and later discharged without being admitted. Officials have since confirmed one additional hospitalization, bringing the total number of hospital admissions to six.
In addition to the confirmed cases, health authorities say that around 44 more individuals have reported symptoms consistent with Salmonella infection after eating at the restaurant. However, these cases are still under investigation and have not yet been confirmed through laboratory testing.
At this stage, officials have not identified a specific food item responsible for the outbreak. Investigators are examining food handling practices, ingredients, and kitchen conditions to find the source of contamination.
As a precaution, the restaurant has been temporarily closed by health authorities. Officials stated that this step is necessary to support a thorough investigation and to ensure that all safety standards are met before the business is allowed to reopen.
Public health teams continue to monitor the situation closely and are advising anyone who visited the restaurant and is experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, fever, or vomiting to seek medical attention.
The investigation remains ongoing, and more updates are expected as laboratory results and inspections provide further clarity on the source of the outbreak.
