Toronto Police Service has released images of a suspect wanted in connection with an alleged assault on a woman wearing a hijab aboard a public bus in Toronto. The incident is being investigated as a suspected hate-motivated attack.
According to police, the incident took place on a Durham Region Transit bus in the Scarborough area earlier this week. Investigators say the suspect approached the victim and allegedly made several offensive and anti-Muslim remarks before physically assaulting her.
The attack was captured on video and later shared online, drawing widespread attention. In the footage, the man can be heard shouting abusive language before kicking the woman. Another passenger is seen confronting the suspect, calling out the behaviour and demanding that he stop.
The victim suffered minor injuries, police said. The suspect left the bus shortly after the incident. Authorities confirmed that the victim and the suspect were not known to each other.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an act of Islamophobia. The organization stated that such attacks are deeply concerning and called for stronger action from authorities to address rising hate-related incidents.
Police have described the suspect as a man between 30 and 40 years old with a heavy build. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and a camouflage baseball cap with a Canada logo. Officers are asking the public for help in identifying and locating the individual.
Transit officials have said they are cooperating fully with the investigation and emphasized their commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all passengers.
Authorities continue to investigate the case and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
