In a landmark advancement for the logistics sector, South Korea has authorized its inaugural paid autonomous freight transport initiative. This green light allows the local self-driving technology company RideFlux Inc. to commence commercial operations, as declared by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Beginning in June, RideFlux will initiate its parcel delivery services using autonomous trucks capable of speeds up to 90 km/h along a 112-kilometer segment of the Jungbu Expressway.
Collaborating with Lotte Global Logistics, both entities aim to finalize a freight agreement ahead of the service launch, which will initially run three times weekly during off-peak hours to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
During the initial pilot phase, RideFlux will operate a 25-ton Maxen truck from Tata Daewoo Mobility Co. Each rollout will adopt a phased safety methodology. Initially, a test driver will oversee operations from behind the wheel. The second phase, anticipated next year, will see the driver transition to the passenger seat, gradually increasing autonomy until the truck operates entirely unmanned.
Officials assert that this approval is a major milestone in the progression of autonomous driving technology within logistics, symbolizing South Korea's dedication to innovation and modernization in transportation infrastructure.
As the initiative advances, it is poised to facilitate broader implementation of self-driving freight solutions, potentially revolutionizing the logistics landscape both nationally and internationally.
