Israel has announced that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will reopen on Wednesday, a significant move to allow humanitarian aid into the conflict-affected Gaza Strip. The decision follows the handover of additional bodies of deceased hostages by Hamas, a gesture that helped ease tensions surrounding the recent ceasefire agreement.
According to reports from the Israeli public broadcaster Kan, the reopening of Rafah is contingent upon Israel’s security clearance. Palestinians who had previously evacuated Gaza during the conflict will be permitted to return, while others will have the opportunity to exit the enclave for the first time since the escalation of fighting began.
The relief initiative will involve approximately 600 trucks transporting essential supplies such as food, medical equipment, and materials for infrastructure repair. This marks a crucial step in alleviating the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the ongoing conflict has led to widespread destruction and shortages of necessities.
Earlier, Israel had threatened to keep the Rafah crossing closed, citing Hamas’ failure to comply with its obligations under the Gaza ceasefire agreement, particularly regarding the return of deceased hostages. Subsequently, Hamas transferred four coffins through the International Committee of the Red Cross. Israeli authorities confirmed that three of the bodies belonged to Israeli hostages, while the identity of the fourth is still under verification.
No formal statements have yet been released by Israeli or Palestinian authorities regarding the border reopening or aid delivery. Nevertheless, this step signals a cautious effort toward mitigating the humanitarian emergency in Gaza. International organizations and neighboring countries continue to monitor developments, advocating for enhanced cooperation between Israel and Hamas to ensure aid reaches those most in need.
