Paris Saint-Germain secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final, producing one of the most thrilling matches in the competition’s history. The high-scoring encounter at Parc des Princes in Paris became the highest-scoring semi-final first leg ever seen in the Champions League.
The match featured nonstop attacking football, fast counterattacks, controversial decisions, and late drama as both European giants pushed aggressively for an advantage before next week’s second leg in Munich. Despite leading comfortably at one stage, PSG had to survive a strong Bayern comeback to take a narrow one-goal lead into the return match.
Bayern Munich started the game strongly and took the lead in the 17th minute after Harry Kane converted a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after PSG defender Willian Pacho fouled Luis Díaz inside the penalty area. Kane calmly sent goalkeeper Matvey Safonov the wrong way to score his 13th goal of the tournament.
PSG responded quickly through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who equalized with a brilliant curling strike after cutting inside from the left wing. The Georgian forward caused constant problems for Bayern’s defense throughout the match with his pace, movement, and finishing ability.
The home side then moved ahead when midfielder João Neves scored with a header from a corner kick despite pressure from Bayern defenders. However, Bayern answered again through Michael Olise, who finished a fast attacking move to level the score at 2-2.
Just before halftime, PSG regained the lead after the referee awarded another penalty following a handball by Bayern defender Alphonso Davies after a VAR review. Bayern players strongly protested the decision, arguing that the ball had first struck Davies’ body before touching his arm. Nevertheless, Ousmane Dembélé stepped up and scored from the spot to make it 3-2 before the break.
PSG continued their attacking display in the second half and extended the lead further. Kvaratskhelia scored his second goal of the night with a powerful finish after another quick counterattack exposed Bayern’s high defensive line. Moments later, Dembélé also completed his brace after receiving a pass from Désiré Doué and firing a low shot past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give PSG a 5-2 advantage.
At that point, PSG appeared fully in control, but Bayern Munich refused to give up. Defender Dayot Upamecano scored with a header from Joshua Kimmich’s free kick to reduce the deficit. Soon after, Luis Díaz added another goal for Bayern with a strong finish that made the score 5-4 and completely changed the atmosphere of the match.
The final minutes were filled with pressure as Bayern pushed for an equalizer while PSG struggled to control the game defensively. PSG defender Willian Pacho made a crucial goal-line clearance in stoppage time to deny Bayern a dramatic fifth goal.
After the match, PSG coach Luis Enrique described the game as one of the most intense matches of his coaching career. He praised both teams for their attacking mentality and admitted the physical and emotional demands of the match were extremely high.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany remained confident despite the defeat and said his team could still turn the tie around at the Allianz Arena in front of their home supporters. He promised Bayern would continue attacking aggressively in the second leg instead of playing cautiously.
The result leaves the semi-final finely balanced ahead of next week’s decisive return match in Munich. With both teams showing attacking strength but defensive weaknesses, football fans are expecting another exciting contest as PSG attempt to reach the Champions League final while Bayern aim to complete a comeback at home.
The winner of the tie will advance to the Champions League final in Budapest on May 30.
