This Earth Day, Old Doha Port is showcasing its dedication to marine conservation, waste management, and seabed preservation. These efforts highlight the port's commitment to supporting a sustainable marine environment that aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the goals of eco-friendly tourism.
A cornerstone of these efforts is the Seabed Cleaning Initiative, which began in 2023 and is now in its fourth year. This program unites professional divers, technical experts, government entities, and private sector partners to clean the seafloor at depths reaching six meters. The teams meticulously remove harmful plastics, abandoned fishing nets, ropes, and other significant marine waste that endangers marine life and complicates safe navigation.
Prior to each cleaning operation, comprehensive surveys are conducted to pinpoint areas in need of attention. Collected debris is carefully categorized, with recyclable items processed in partnership with specialized recycling firms. This initiative not only focuses on cleanup but also aims to enhance public awareness regarding marine conservation while fostering community involvement in safeguarding coastal waters.
In addition, Old Doha Port adheres to robust marine pollution response protocols. The facility is outfitted with specialized equipment, such as floating barriers designed to contain oil spills, alongside various recovery and treatment technologies. Dedicated response teams are consistently on standby and partake in regular drills in collaboration with relevant authorities to maintain high readiness.
Moreover, the port employs a rigorous waste management system for its marine activities. This includes designated waste collection sites for solid waste, sewage treatment capabilities, and storage solutions for used oils. Strict regulations prohibit waste discharge into marina waters, with continuous monitoring ensuring strict adherence to environmental regulations.
Through these committed efforts, Old Doha Port is enhancing its role in preserving marine ecosystems while promoting sustainable development within Qatar.
