Noatum Logistics, part of AD Ports Group, and Hafeet Rail have officially signed an agreement to initiate a dedicated rail freight service that will connect Abu Dhabi with Sohar. This significant development was revealed during the Global Rail 2025 exhibition in Abu Dhabi, creating the first direct rail link between these two crucial Gulf hubs aimed at facilitating trade and enhancing supply chains.
High-Capacity Daily Freight Operations
The newly established service will operate seven container trains weekly, with each train capable of transporting 276 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). These trains will handle various container sizes, including 20-foot, 40-foot, and 45-foot containers, with an expected annual throughput near 193,200 TEUs. This robust connection is poised to accommodate a wide array of goods such as general cargo, manufactured items, food supplies, pharmaceuticals, and agrifood products from the outset.
Enhancing Regional Supply Chain Dynamics
Samir Chaturvedi, CEO of Noatum Logistics, referred to the rail link as a landmark achievement, stating that it “links two of the region’s most vital hubs through rail for the first time.” He asserted that this partnership would offer customers a cost-effective and eco-friendly transport solution while bolstering regional supply chains and unlocking new business prospects between the UAE and Oman.
Hafeet Rail's Contribution to Logistics
Ahmed Al Musawa Al Hashemi, CEO of Hafeet Rail, remarked on the pivotal role the dedicated rail service will play in providing reliable and efficient cross-border container transportation. He noted that the initiative will enhance trade, promote sustainable growth, and establish Hafeet Rail as a key player in the regional logistics landscape. This collaboration is anticipated to integrate the logistics frameworks of the UAE and Oman, fostering a comprehensive ecosystem.
Environmental Benefits of Rail Transportation
The introduction of this rail corridor presents an environmentally friendly alternative to road transport, optimizing fuel usage and mitigating carbon emissions for each ton transported. Rail is especially suited for moving large volumes over longer distances with minimal environmental impact. The higher capacity and lower energy consumption of this system align with sustainability objectives while enhancing operational efficiency and lowering costs for businesses.
Expanding on Existing Logistics Frameworks
Noatum Logistics' ongoing rail initiatives, such as the Khalifa Port–Fujairah Terminals shuttle introduced in late 2024, lay a strong groundwork for this cross-border service. The new Abu Dhabi–Sohar connection will broaden the network’s scope, allowing for smoother cargo movement between Emirati and Omani markets while reinforcing the regional logistics infrastructure.
Once operational, this dedicated rail corridor will function as a crucial trade route linking two strategic logistics hubs on the Arabian Peninsula. The partnership signifies both nations' dedication to economic diversification, enhanced connectivity, and minimizing environmental footprints. By merging Hafeet Rail’s infrastructure capabilities with Noatum Logistics’ freight management expertise, this venture is poised to redefine sustainable and efficient trade practices in the Gulf region.
