NASA Kicks Off Permanent Lunar Base Development with New Initiatives

Post by : Bianca Hayes

NASA, the United States space agency, has officially commenced the primary phase of constructing a permanent base on the Moon. This announcement follows the successful Artemis 2 lunar flyby mission just two months prior.

Contracts amounting to hundreds of millions have been awarded to four U.S. space firms to aid in the development of the lunar base project, designed for long-term human missions and scientific exploration on the Moon.

Blue Origin will contribute by providing two cargo landers essential for transporting vital equipment and lunar vehicles to the Moon’s surface, focusing on regions near the lunar south pole, identified as key for future missions.

Astrolab and Lunar Outpost are tasked with developing the lunar terrain vehicles to facilitate astronauts' movement across the lunar landscape and support ongoing research activities.

In addition, Firefly Aerospace, recognized for its successful lunar landing last year, will launch the first drones to assist in exploring challenging terrains and bolstering future construction projects.

NASA aims to deploy all necessary equipment prior to the landing of the first Artemis astronauts, anticipated in 2028.

Following this initial phase, NASA’s long-term strategic plan for the Moon base will see a second phase beginning in 2029, extending into the early 2030s. This phase will focus on establishing permanent infrastructure such as a lunar power grid.

By the 2030s, the lunar base is expected to be fully operational, with NASA envisions creating specialized habitats for extended astronaut stays, representing a significant leap towards sustaining human life beyond Earth.
