Miss Universe Iceland 2025 Resigns Amid Illness and Controversy

Post by : Sean Carter

The Miss Universe pageant, renowned for its glamour and recognition of women, is embroiled in fresh controversy. Helena Hafþórsdóttir O’Connor, the 2025 titleholder from Iceland, has officially severed her relationship with the Miss Iceland organisation.

In a comprehensive social media statement released on December 16, the 20-year-old model described her experience at the Miss Universe competition in Thailand as unjust. She alleges she was expelled from the pageant without her consent after suffering from a severe illness and was subsequently coerced into paying a fee to retain her title.

Helena garnered the Miss Iceland crown on April 3, 2025, and was expected to represent her country at the international level in Thailand on November 21. She dedicated months to preparing for the event and fulfilling all duties expected of her while holding the title.

Her situation escalated when she endured severe food poisoning during the pageant. Although weakened, she was committed to recovering and rejoining the competition. However, she asserts that the Miss Iceland organisation removed her from the event without her consent or the option to return post-recovery.

Helena further claimed that following her removal, she was informed that she would incur a ‘penalty’ if she wished to keep the Miss Iceland title or officially relinquish it. She emphasized that such terms were absent from her contract and felt it was deeply unjust. In her view, the organisation violated their agreement by taking away an opportunity she earned through diligence.

Additionally, Helena alleged that she was discouraged from discussing her illness and recovery candidly. An official communication depicted her as having voluntarily withdrawn from the competition, a narrative she firmly rejected. She described this representation as misleading and detrimental to her reputation.

Helena also voiced serious concerns regarding the safety and living conditions at the competition site. She pointed to inadequate security, limited access to essential needs, and unsanitary food as factors contributing to her health issues. Moreover, she highlighted that her role with Miss Iceland was unpaid, placing considerable financial burden on her.

Disheartened by her experience, Helena stated that she could no longer support an organization she once believed championed women’s empowerment and unity. She stressed that she wouldn’t encourage future titleholders to experience similar circumstances. Her lawyer has formally notified the Miss Iceland organisation about her contract termination, citing several breaches.

Despite her challenging experience, Helena concluded her statement on an optimistic note, expressing gratitude to her family, friends, and supporters for their unwavering support. She looks forward to new opportunities on the horizon.

As of now, the Miss Iceland organisation has yet to respond to her allegations. Helena’s story contributes to the ongoing discussions regarding transparency, safety, and fairness in beauty pageants, highlighting the treatment contestants often face behind the scenes.
