Ontario MP Michael Ma’s defection to the Liberal Party has brought the government one seat shy of a majority, sparking speculation about further floor crossings.
Ma, who represents the Markham–Unionville riding in the Greater Toronto Area, left the Conservative caucus less than a day after attending their Christmas party. His decision has significantly shifted the balance of power, leaving Liberals with 171 seats in the House of Commons, just one short of the 172 needed for a majority government.
Energy Minister Tim Hodgson confirmed that other MPs have expressed interest in joining the Liberals. “Let’s say I’m getting lots of inquiries,” he told reporters, without naming any individuals. When asked about Ma’s switch, Hodgson said all three—Ma, the Prime Minister, and himself—share a pragmatic approach to politics and a desire for unity.
The move has created a stir among Conservative MPs. Several expressed surprise and frustration, noting Ma had previously criticized the Liberal government and had attended party events alongside Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Poilievre described the defection as an attempt by the Liberals to manipulate a majority, emphasizing that Canadians voted for a minority government and their will must be respected.
With the Liberals now just one seat short of a majority, the government can pass legislation if one opposition MP votes with them or two abstain during confidence votes. Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon noted that some Conservative MPs have shared their dissatisfaction with their party’s direction with Liberal colleagues, hinting that further defections are possible.
Despite the political turbulence, Poilievre remains confident as he approaches the mandatory leadership review at the Conservative convention next month, asserting that the party remains committed to fighting for affordable housing, food, and hope for Canadians.
