Matt Jeneroux Steps Down as Conservative MP Amid Budget Controversy

Edmonton – Matt Jeneroux, a Conservative MP, announced his resignation on Thursday, marking him as the second Tory to exit the party this week following the federal budget's unveiling. Representing Edmonton Riverbend since 2015, Jeneroux's statement did not outline specific reasons for his departure but described the choice as challenging yet essential.

“It was a tough decision, but I believe it’s the right one,” he noted, expressing respect for fellow MPs from various parties and underscoring his hope for Canada’s unity and progress.

Having backed the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre during the last election, Jeneroux admitted the results were not what he hoped for but maintained his respect for his colleagues' commitment to service. He informed the Opposition Whip of his resignation earlier and intends to address the House of Commons one last time before departing.

Now, he plans to fully dedicate his attention to family and personal obligations, stepping back from his political role. Notably, Jeneroux opted not to join the Conservative sub-amendment vote on the federal budget, which the Prime Minister labeled a confidence motion. The government managed to secure its position with backing from other opposition members.

His resignation closely follows that of Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont, who joined the Liberals, raising speculation about potential further exits from the Conservative ranks, influenced by tension regarding Poilievre’s leadership. D’Entremont hinted that others could share similar sentiments about the direction of the party.

In his statement, Jeneroux expressed appreciation towards his supporters and asked for family privacy during this time. “While the results were not what I anticipated, I hold immense respect for the incredible individuals elected to the House of Commons, on both sides, committed to making our nation better,” he stated.

Jeneroux's resignation signifies a pivotal moment for the Conservative Party, reflecting internal discord amidst discussions surrounding fiscal planning and party leadership. Analysts predict that these events may shape the forthcoming strategies and discussions as the party gears up for future parliamentary endeavors.
