Irish actor Liam Neeson recently opened up about his role in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and shared his true feelings about how his character died. Neeson, who played Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in the 1999 movie, said he still feels unhappy about the way his character was killed.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, the 73-year-old actor said, “I thought my death was a bit namby-pamby.” He added that, as a Jedi Master, his character should not have fallen so easily during the final fight against Darth Maul.
“It Felt Silly,” Neeson Says
In the film, Qui-Gon dies in a lightsaber battle. Darth Maul tricks him with a move that goes from his face to his stomach, and Qui-Gon gets hit. Neeson said it did not look strong or smart for a Jedi Master to fall for such a simple trick. He even rolled his eyes while telling the story, saying, “Oh please. Hardly a Master Jedi.”
Although Neeson thinks the death scene was weak, he still looks back on the Star Wars experience with happy memories. He shared a funny moment when he and actor Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi, were filming their first lightsaber scene.
“The first time Ewan and I drew our lightsabers, we both made the sound — the classic lightsaber hum — at the same time,” Liam laughed. “George [Lucas, the director] told us, ‘Boys, you don’t have to do that. We can add that stuff later.’” The story shows that even big actors can get excited like kids while filming such big scenes.
Even though Qui-Gon Jinn only appeared in one movie, the character had a big role in the Star Wars story. He was Obi-Wan Kenobi’s teacher and was the one who first wanted to train young Anakin Skywalker, who later becomes Darth Vader. Though Qui-Gon died early in the saga, his name and ideas were remembered in the later films and shows.
Neeson’s love for the character brought him back to the Star Wars world many years later. He made a short appearance as Qui-Gon Jinn in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which starred Ewan McGregor. “It was just one little scene. I kinda liked that,” Liam said. “It was just one line. It was nice to be with Ewan again after 18 or 20 years. It was sweet.”
Besides that, Liam Neeson has also voiced Qui-Gon in other Star Wars stories like Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars, and The Rise of Skywalker. His connection to the galaxy far, far away remains strong, even after so many years.
Even though Qui-Gon Jinn didn’t live long in the movies, his legacy has stayed alive. He believed in Anakin Skywalker’s future, and he taught important lessons to Obi-Wan. The way Liam Neeson played the role gave it depth and emotion. Many fans still love Qui-Gon Jinn, and they remember his wise words and brave heart.
Liam Neeson’s honesty about his character’s death shows how much actors care about the stories they help tell. His comments may also remind writers and directors how important it is to give strong endings to strong characters.
In the end, even if Qui-Gon’s death was “namby-pamby,” the character, and the actor who played him, still hold a special place in Star Wars history.
