Kuwait is set to formalize a pivotal agreement with China Communications Construction Company next week for the completion of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project, as confirmed by Public Works Minister Noura Al-Mashaan. The ceremony will see participation from Kuwait’s prime minister and Chinese representatives, underscoring the deal’s significance.
This agreement entails engineering, procurement, and construction efforts for the initial phase of the port, valued at approximately 1.219 billion Kuwaiti dinars, marking it as one of the nation’s largest infrastructure contracts.
Situated on Bubiyan Island in northern Kuwait, the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port is recognized as a strategic national endeavor. The port aspires to establish a reliable regional trade lane and position Kuwait as a vital commercial center. China has expressed interest in connecting this port with its Belt and Road Initiative, which is aimed at enhancing global trade links.
The Kuwaiti administration is optimistic that the port will facilitate economic diversification, stimulate GDP growth, and restore Kuwait’s standing in regional commerce and finance. Officials have indicated that nearly half of the initial phase is already complete, though specific details about the remaining construction have not been disclosed.
This port is a crucial part of various grand-scale initiatives Kuwait is pursuing with Chinese collaboration, including projects in power, water, renewable energy, waste management, and new residential developments. The strengthening of ties between Kuwait and China is evident following multiple agreements solidified in 2023, indicating a deeper economic alliance.
