Rishab Shetty’s epic folk tale, Kantara Chapter 1, saw a slight dip in box office earnings on Thursday as Diwali celebrations wrapped up. Nonetheless, its performance remains strong both in India and across international markets.
As reported by industry tracker Sacnilk, the film generated ₹9.85 crore on Day 21, marking a 16.17% drop from the previous day. Originally in Kannada, the film has garnered impressive sales outside Karnataka, especially in the Hindi-speaking regions, Telugu areas, Tamil Nadu, and overseas.
On October 22, the Hindi version earned ₹4.25 crore, outpacing the Kannada version’s ₹4.1 crore. With this, Kantara Chapter 1 is closing in on the ₹560 crore domestic threshold, currently at ₹556.75 crore after 21 days, while the worldwide gross has crossed ₹760.5 crore, including ₹108.5 crore from international collections.
Produced by Hombale Films, Kantara Chapter 1 launched in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Tamil. Thanks to impressive international buzz, an English-dubbed version is set to release globally on October 31.
The English version will have a runtime of 2 hours and 14 minutes, shorter than the original’s 2 hours and 49 minutes. This adaptation is anticipated to further enhance box office returns.
Initially expected to drop on Amazon Prime Video around October 30—roughly four weeks post-theatrical release—the status of the streaming release remains in flux as the film continues to perform remarkably, with the makers possibly delaying it to maximize theater profits.
Set in pre-colonial Karnataka under the Kadamba rule in Banavasi, Kantara Chapter 1 tells the story of the tensions between forest tribes and an oppressive king. The film features Rishab Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, Gulshan Devaiah, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, P D Satish Chandra, and Prakash Thuminad.
