In an unexpected turn of events, India’s last T20 match against Australia at the Gabba was thwarted by relentless rain, resulting in an abandoned game. Nonetheless, the Indian team emerged victorious with a 3-1 series win, highlighting their prowess just ahead of the T20 World Cup next year.
India started strong after being put to bat, with openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma swiftly reaching 52 runs without losing a wicket in under five overs before inclement weather intervened. Gill was impressive, hitting six boundaries, and ended the innings unbeaten at 29, while Abhishek held his ground at 23, having benefited from two dropped catches.
Despite the enthusiastic crowd, the storm kept lingering, leading to the cancellation of the match more than two hours later.
During the series, the first game in Canberra was also interrupted by rain, followed by Australia winning the second match in Melbourne due to excellent bowling by Josh Hazlewood. However, with several players from the Ashes squad pulled out, India made a strong comeback, clinching the third T20 match in Hobart by five wickets and the fourth in Gold Coast by 48 runs.
Abhishek Sharma earned the Player of the Series title, amassing 163 runs at an impressive average of 40.75. “Every player contributed throughout the series, and coming back from a loss shows our determination. It was a unified team effort,” noted Suryakumar Yadav, India’s captain.
Mitch Marsh, Australia’s captain, commended both teams for their competitive nature, stating, “This series was intense, with both teams performing fiercely. India excelled when it was crucial—kudos to them for their achievement.”
This victory sees India, ranked as the top T20 team globally, returning home with renewed confidence and a robust team ahead of their T20 World Cup title defense on their home turf next year.
