Sriram Raghavan’s much-anticipated war film Ikkis, inspired by the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, has seen a last-minute change in its release plans. The film, which was scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 25, will now release on January 1, 2026.
Backed by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Ikkis marks Agastya Nanda’s lead role in a powerful military drama and also features legendary actor Dharmendra in what is expected to be his final appearance on the big screen. The makers decided to shift the release as Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar continues its unstoppable run at the box office, with packed shows and record-breaking numbers nationwide.
Producer Dinesh Vijan has clarified that the delay was a strategic call rather than a forced move. According to him, Ikkis is a film that needs breathing space in theatres to connect with audiences. With Dhurandhar still dominating screens and delivering the strongest second weekend ever for a Hindi film, the team felt it was wiser to avoid a direct clash during an already crowded festive period.
Vijan also highlighted that a solo release in the new year gives the film a fair chance to shine. He noted that similar release strategies have benefited films like Hindi Medium, Pushpa, and Chhaava in the past, proving that less competition often leads to better audience engagement and longer theatrical runs.
The December release window was further packed with Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday’s Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri slated for Christmas, along with the global release of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, making the competition even tougher for Ikkis.
Sharing his confidence in the new release date, Vijan said audiences are open to meaningful cinema at the start of the year, and January offers a stronger, more focused run. He added that when the timing feels right, it is best to embrace it.
Ikkis chronicles the extraordinary courage of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, who laid down his life at just 21 during the Battle of Basantar in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat in a pivotal role and is now set to arrive in theatres on January 1, 2026.
