The International Cricket Council (ICC) is anticipated to soon address the Bangladesh Cricket Board's request for relocating the T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India. Following security apprehensions, Bangladesh proposed moving its games to Sri Lanka, but indications suggest that the ICC might not entertain this request. Instead, alternative venues within India are likely to be put forward.
Bangladesh's group-stage matches are slated for Kolkata and Mumbai. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expressed these concerns after highlighting player safety issues and recent events involving cricketer Mustafizur Rahman. However, reports indicate that the ICC sees no compelling reason to completely relocate the matches from India.
Rather than endorsing Sri Lanka, the ICC is thought to recommend Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram as potential sites. These cities have a commendable history of hosting international cricket and are regarded as secure and well-organized. This suggestion seems to aim at alleviating Bangladesh's worries while keeping the tournament's framework intact.
The BCB’s leadership has voiced mixed sentiments about these alternatives. President Aminul Islam noted that any decision lies not solely with them but also hinges on government discussions. He remarked that dialogues remain active, with no definitive position taken yet. The Bangladesh government has also requested direct updates from Indian officials regarding security processes.
It’s worth noting that Bangladeshi officials have been operating in India without complications. Recently, Bangladeshi umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat officiated an international match in Vadodara and is likely to be part of the T20 World Cup officiating team, which could undermine claims regarding the safety of Bangladeshi players in India.
With less than a month remaining until teams commence practice, the ICC faces pressure to promptly resolve the matter. Any delays could disrupt plans, logistics, and preparations for the tournament.
