Actress Huma Qureshi recently reflected on the challenges she faced when entering the Bollywood scene, sharing that her parents were initially shocked by her first film offer. She disclosed that they believed it was part of a “prostitution racket.”
‘They could hardly accept it,’ Huma recalls
Huma vividly remembered her parents' skepticism when she announced someone wanted to cast her in a film. “My parents were in disbelief. They questioned why anyone would want to cast me. It was something they found utterly unbelievable. They thought it was a prostitution racket; they were certain of it,” she explained.
She mentioned that persuading them to support her acting aspirations took substantial effort. “Looking back, I realize they had no confidence in my ability to assess things for myself. Eventually, I did convince them, but my parents aren't from this world. Even today, they still don't fully understand the industry,” she added.
The project that never launched
Despite their initial concerns, Huma took the plunge. She met with the filmmakers, read the script, and even did a screen test. Sadly, the project never came to fruition. “The film didn’t get made, which was disappointing,” she lamented.
Breakthrough role in Gangs of Wasseypur
Prior to Bollywood, Huma had appeared in various short films and commercials. Her significant breakthrough arrived with Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed Gangs of Wasseypur: Part 2 (2012), which garnered her considerable fame.
Diverse career and recent achievements
Throughout her career, Huma has played a wide array of roles across different genres—from Ek Thi Daayan and Badlapur to Jolly LLB 2. While films like Dedh Ishqiya and D-Day didn’t achieve great success, she has consistently impressed audiences with her strong performances.
Recently, she reprised her role as the determined politician Rani Bharti in Maharani Season 4. She also took on the role of a cop in Bayan, which featured at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and appeared in Jolly LLB 3. Huma is set to portray the antagonist in Netflix’s upcoming Delhi Crime 3.
