On Friday night, the Toronto Raptors, led by head coach Darko Rajakovic, put their focus squarely on the task at hand. Facing the Washington Wizards, they knew that a victory—coupled with a loss for the Indiana Pacers—would grant them a spot in the prestigious knockout stage of the Emirates NBA Cup.
“We knew what was at stake, and we went into the game with the right mentality,” stated reserve center Sandro Mamukelashvili. “It’s about making sure we secure our spot. We’re pleased with the win but have to stay focused for the next challenge. Everyone says the job isn’t done; we’ve got to get ourselves to Vegas.”
The Raptors delivered a strong performance with a decisive 140-110 win against Washington. The victory was further sweetened by the Indiana Pacers' defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers, leaving the Raptors as the leaders of East Group A, earning them the first quarterfinal place in this season's tournament.
Brandon Ingram shone for Toronto (11-5) with 24 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, marking their latest win as their sixth in a row. RJ Barrett from Mississauga added 24 points and eight rebounds, while Scottie Barnes tallied 23 points, including a scoring burst during the third quarter, and Mamukelashvili rounded off the performance with 23 points and seven rebounds.
“Advancing wasn’t on my mind, but winning was crucial for us,” Barnes noted about the game. “We were informed before the match that a win would secure our advancement, so we understood its importance.”
Currently, the Raptors lead the Atlantic Division, sitting ahead of the New York Knicks, and are second in the Eastern Conference, trailing the Detroit Pistons by 2½ games.
Rajakovic emphasized that while the NBA Cup is important, the main focus remains on making the playoffs. However, he acknowledged that the pressure of these high-stakes games would ultimately benefit the team’s younger players.
“Competing in this knockout format is a different experience that teaches us a lot,” Rajakovic stated. “We’ve got the ambition to reach the final four, and I’m genuinely excited for what’s to come.”
The upcoming NBA Cup quarterfinals are set to take place at each team’s home arena, while the semifinals and finals will be contested at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
“It feels good to be winning games,” Barnes expressed with a smile. “While there might be some bonuses involved, the ultimate goal is to perform well in Vegas.”
