The Enduring Wisdom of Paul Newman in George Clooney's Journey

Post by : Mina Carter

George Clooney recently reflected on a significant encounter from the late 1990s that fundamentally influenced his approach to fame. In a candid interview, he discussed the unique challenges that arise whenever he steps out in public, often leading to lengthy interactions and conversations—a balancing act he initially struggled to manage at the peak of his early career.

During this period, Clooney frequently confined himself indoors to evade the incessant attention that followed his breakthrough role on ER. However, a surprising meeting with the iconic Paul Newman prompted a profound shift in his outlook. Clooney reminisced about this pivotal moment while contemplating the pressures of fame that often encouraged him to withdraw.

The encounter occurred at the Warner Bros. lot, where Clooney was on the set of ER while Newman was filming Message in a Bottle. Spotting Newman while driving a studio golf cart, Clooney decided to stop and say hello. Approaching him casually, Clooney introduced himself, but Newman, with a cigarette in hand, didn’t recognize him yet, as Clooney's fame was just beginning to rise.

As they conversed, passersby called out, “George!” repeatedly. It was then that Newman began to realize Clooney was more than just another actor—he was quickly becoming a well-known figure in the industry. Bit by bit, Newman put together the pieces of Clooney’s burgeoning success.

Once Newman recognized Clooney, he imparted a piece of wisdom that has resonated with him ever since: “George, don’t let them keep you at home.” Clooney grasped the essence of this advice immediately; Newman was cautioning against the common actor’s impulse to retreat from public life as fame grows, which ultimately results in isolation rather than protection.

This eye-opening moment led Clooney to understand that avoiding public engagement was not a safeguard—rather, it was a limitation. Newman’s counsel inspired him to stay connected to the world rather than withdraw from it. Clooney embraced that philosophy, learning to embrace fame instead of allowing it to diminish his life.

Though Clooney and Newman never forged a close bond, the latter's influence on Clooney’s artistic path remains significant. Clooney has long held Newman’s work in high regard and humorously acknowledged borrowing aspects of Newman’s style, confessing he “ripped off Paul Newman three or four times,” albeit not as effectively. He has consistently praised Newman’s performance in The Verdict as one of cinema's greatest. Newman passed away in 2008, but his impact on Clooney endures.

Currently, Clooney is promoting his latest film, Jay Kelly, featuring Emily Mortimer, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, and Adam Sandler. The film is hitting select theaters and will be available for streaming starting December 5. Clooney continues to carry Newman’s advice with him—a reminder to embrace life’s opportunities and not allow fame to isolate him.
