Deadly Trailer Fire in Fort William First Nation Claims Two Lives

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating a deadly trailer fire that struck Fort William First Nation. This is the fourth trailer fire reported in the Thunder Bay area in just one week.

Fire crews from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were called to Squaw Bay Road shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday. When they arrived, the trailer, located away from nearby homes, was completely engulfed in flames. Four fire trucks and the platoon chief responded to the emergency.

The first arriving team worked quickly to contain the fire. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, two people were found dead inside the trailer.

The Anishinabek Police Service also attended the scene, and officers from the Ontario Provincial Police, along with fire investigators, began examining the site to determine the cause of the blaze. Officials have not yet confirmed what started the fire.

Fire authorities reminded residents that functioning smoke detectors are legally required and urged extra caution when using candles or any open flames at home.

The National Indigenous Fire Safety Council reports that Indigenous people are more than five times as likely to die in fires compared to non-Indigenous people. For First Nations communities living on reserves, this risk rises to over ten times higher.

“Our thoughts are with the entire community during this extremely difficult time,” officials said. Crisis support services are available to help those affected cope with this tragic event.
