Five Villagers Saved from Flooded Cave in Laos, Two Still Missing

Rescue teams have successfully saved five out of the seven villagers trapped in a cave in central Laos, yet the search for the other two continues.

On Wednesday, rescuers from Laos and Thailand located the survivors inside a cave in Xaysomboun province, approximately 125 kilometers from Vientiane, the capital.

The Laotian rescue group, Volunteer Rescue for People, announced on social media, “We’ve located 5 individuals alive and unharmed, but we are still on the lookout for 2 others.” Thai rescuer Kengkach Bangkawong confirmed this finding, stating, “At 4:30 pm, we discovered five people. Efforts to locate the other two are ongoing.”

Reports from Lao Economic Daily corroborated these details about the survivors.

The seven villagers had entered the cave on May 20 while searching for gold. Heavy rains resulted in sudden flash flooding, obstructing their exit and trapping them.

Mikko Paasi, a specialized rescue diver from Finland, noted that the conditions within the cave were extremely challenging. He described navigating through “hundreds of meters of constant restrictions, flood waters, collapse risks, and poor air quality.” The location is reportedly an “abandoned gold mine.”

According to local rescuer Baeng, who spoke anonymously, the site is not formally owned. “People often go there to dig for food and resources,” he said.

Rescue operations are still active as teams persist in their search for the remaining two missing villagers in this perilous cave system.
