On November 22, 2025, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing secured the Best Actress accolade at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, often referred to as the Oscars of the Chinese-speaking world. She was honored for her compelling performance in the Malaysian film Mother Bhumi, portraying a widowed farmer and ritual healer. This role diverged from her typical glamorous roles and signified a powerful resurgence following her career's setbacks from a tax evasion scandal in 2018.

Although Fan was unable to attend the awards ceremony in Taipei, she delivered her acceptance speech via phone. She described the role as a profoundly impactful journey, both physically and emotionally, and shared an anecdote about the director’s request for her to alter her appearance for the role, to which she responded with enthusiasm, stating she was prepared to “go all the way.” This role allowed her to forge a strong connection with the character and recognize women's resilience.

Director Chong Keat Aun accepted the award on her behalf and also took home the honor for the best original song from the film. He expressed gratitude towards Fan Bingbing and playfully asked, “Where are you?” He conveyed his wishes for her new beginning, dedicating the award-winning song to her.

The Golden Horse Awards have faced political controversies in recent times. Since 2018, numerous Chinese filmmakers and actors have opted out of the event due to the political climate between China and Taiwan. In 2019, Beijing barred performers from attending after a Taiwanese filmmaker publicly endorsed Taiwan’s independence during a speech. Nonetheless, the awards continue to draw talent from across the region.

In addition to Fan Bingbing, notable winners included the Taiwanese film A Foggy Tale, awarded Best Film for its exploration of Taiwan’s political history. Hong Kong filmmaker Jun Li won Best Director for the drama Queerpanorama, and Taiwanese actor Chang Chen earned Best Leading Actor for his portrayal in Lucky Lu, a narrative centered on an immigrant delivery worker in New York.

The 2025 Golden Horse Awards highlighted an array of films and talents, emphasizing powerful narratives and performances within the Chinese-speaking film community. Fan Bingbing’s recognition marks a significant milestone in her journey back to the film industry after overcoming personal challenges.
