In the captivating A24 film, Eternity, audiences are introduced to a fascinating afterlife where individuals revisit the age when they felt their happiest. They are granted just one week to determine their eternal destiny.
Stars Elizabeth Olsen and Ansel Elgort play Joan and Larry Cutler, an elderly couple who embark on this remarkable journey through the afterlife. To her surprise, Joan unexpectedly reunites with her first husband, Luke, played by Callum Turner, who passed away during the Korean War and has been waiting for her for years. This poignant reunion compels Joan to confront a crucial decision—who will accompany her in eternity?
Olsen describes the film as a mix of humor and profound emotion, conveying its reflective essence. She states, “It invites us to reflect on our loved ones who have left us and our hopes for reunion, as well as our understanding of love.”
Elgort reflects on his role, drawing inspiration from his grandparents' long-lasting marriage. “My grandfather was a marine, always attuned to my grandmother's needs, exemplifying love and respect over decades,” he said.
Directed and co-penned by David Freyne, Eternity artfully intertwines imaginative afterlife landscapes with a deep dive into human emotions. The film explores various realms, such as Beach World, Food World, Man Free World, and Infantilisation World, with one non-negotiable rule: once a choice is made, it cannot be undone.
Helping to navigate this surreal expanse are afterlife coordinators, Anna and Ryan, played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early. Freyne highlighted, “Despite its otherworldly setting, at its core, the film is a reflection on our earthly lives—on what truly brings us joy and the people who matter.”
Mark your calendars for November 26, when Eternity opens in theatres, blending humor, heartfelt moments, and philosophical musings about love and mortality.
