Duffer Brothers Reflect on Their Most Personal Character in Stranger Things

The highly anticipated promotional tour for Stranger Things has begun as fans eagerly await the arrival of Season 5 Volume 1 on 26 November (27 November in India). With the series nearing its conclusion, creators Ross and Matt Duffer took a moment to reflect on the character closest to their hearts after nearly a decade of storytelling.

In an interview with GQ Thailand, the Duffer Brothers were queried about which character they would most miss. Ross Duffer acknowledged that it was hard to choose just one, given their fondness for all the characters. However, he revealed that Mike Wheeler holds a special place for him. Ross mentioned that Mike was designed as a reflection of their younger selves, providing a nostalgic trip back to their formative years. He noted that the series has provided them a unique chance to revisit those cherished childhood memories over nearly ten years.

Matt Duffer resonated with his brother’s sentiment, emphasizing that Mike was the first character they conceived for the series, playing a foundational role in the show’s early concepts. According to Matt, because Mike symbolizes their younger selves, he too would want to bid farewell to him.

Portrayed by Finn Wolfhard, Mike Wheeler has consistently been a pivotal figure in the series. He serves as the unofficial leader of “The Party,” the group of friends at the narrative's core. He is instrumental in discovering Eleven, supports her through her challenges, and spearheads the mission to find Will Byers during his disappearance in the inaugural season.
