Exploring the UAE: ICOM Dubai 2025 Takes Delegates on Cultural Journeys

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Dubai played host to museum experts from across the globe as part of the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025). Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this significant event made history by being the first global conference held in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. In addition to the primary conference sessions, delegates participated in a curated set of excursions focusing on the UAE’s rich heritage and its evolving identity as a cultural epicenter.

The Local Social Programme featured engaging day trips throughout all seven emirates. Each itinerary was thoughtfully crafted to showcase the unique character and identity of each emirate, blending heritage, innovation, nature, and modern creativity in a balanced fashion. Delegates ventured through traditional souks, ecological landmarks, state-of-the-art museums, and archaeological sites, illustrating the UAE's journey from ancient times to its modern-day achievements.

Notable destinations included Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain, Mleiha Archaeological Centre and the Heritage Museum in Sharjah, as well as significant cultural sites in Abu Dhabi such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan. In Ras Al Khaimah, delegates explored Dhayah Fort and the National Museum, while Dubai offered experiences blending history with innovation at the Museum of the Future, Etihad Museum, and Al Shindagha Museum. Additional depth was added with visits to the Ajman Museum and archaeological areas like Tell-Abraq and Ed-Dour in Umm Al Quwain.

Complementing the local tours, the Regional Excursions Programme allowed delegates to gain deeper insights into the broader cultural tapestry of the Middle East. Extended trips to Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan introduced attendees to contrasting museum landscapes, focusing on shared heritage, preservation initiatives, and regional stories that contribute to cultural identity.

Through a blend of local and regional experiences, participants not only gleaned insights into the UAE’s cultural richness but also into the collaborative efforts of museums across the region to safeguard stories, traditions, and wisdom. These excursions underscored ICOM’s core mission—unifying cultures through exchange, education, and meaningful on-site exploration.
