Many people wake up after a full night’s rest and still feel worn out. Iron plays a key role in producing hemoglobin, the molecule that transports oxygen in the blood. Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and pain medicine expert, notes that persistent tiredness is often one of the earliest hints of iron deficiency. He explains, “Iron helps your body form the red blood cells that carry oxygen. Without enough, your energy drops and you can feel weak or dizzy.”
Certain groups face a higher chance of low iron: people who menstruate heavily, pregnant individuals, those following vegetarian diets, and people with some medical conditions. If untreated, low iron can progress to iron deficiency anaemia, which may bring additional signs such as paler skin, cold extremities, shortness of breath or unusual cravings like chewing ice.
The encouraging news is that iron levels can often be replenished. Dr Sood recommends adding iron-rich foods to everyday meals. “Leafy greens, red meat, lentils, beans and fortified cereals are strong sources of iron,” he says. Pairing these with vitamin C–rich foods — think oranges, tomatoes or bell peppers — helps the body absorb iron more effectively.
If food changes aren’t sufficient, a clinician might suggest iron supplements, but it’s important to consult a doctor before starting them. Dr Sood stresses that anyone experiencing extended periods of fatigue should have their iron checked with a simple blood test. Early diagnosis and treatment can restore energy and improve overall wellbeing.

By choosing iron-rich foods, supporting absorption with vitamin C, getting adequate rest and seeking medical advice when needed, you can reduce the impact of low iron and feel better day to day.
