The Kansas City Chiefs secured a hard-fought 30-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, but the game’s conclusion turned chaotic as a postgame altercation erupted between players.
The skirmish began when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes approached Lions defensive back Brian Branch for a customary handshake. Branch appeared to snub the gesture, prompting wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to intervene. Words were exchanged, and Branch shoved Smith-Schuster in the helmet, causing him to drop to one knee.
Running back Isiah Pacheco attempted to restrain Branch, but Smith-Schuster retaliated, trying to bring Branch down. In the struggle, Branch managed to rip off Smith-Schuster’s helmet. Players from both teams rushed in to separate the combatants, and at least one punch was thrown before the brawl finally subsided. After tensions eased, players exchanged final gestures of sportsmanship and retreated to their locker rooms.
The NFL is expected to review the incident and may impose disciplinary actions.
On the field, the Chiefs bounced back from a tough loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night, improving their record to 3-3. Detroit, meanwhile, saw its four-game streak of scoring 30 points come to an end, dropping to 4-2.
